In the article There and back again: re-envisioning ‘relationship therapy’ as the center of a contemporary, cultural, and contextual person-centered therapy Keith Tudor highlights constructs of the client-centered framework outlined by Carl Rogers. Those constructs are actualizing tendency, experience, awareness, the self, incongruence, the response to threat, congruence, unconditional positive regard conditions of worth, constructs related to valuing and constructs related to source of knowledge (Tudor, 2022). Given the framework of these constructs it enables person-centered counseling an effective approach for clients with a wide range of presenting issues. The article continues that Rogers outlines aspects of client-centered therapy including the attitude and orientation of the counselor and the view of the therapeutic relationship as experienced by the client (Tudor, 2022). This perspective identifies the importance of genuineness being present in the counselor. If a client does not feel that the counselor is genuine in the therapeutic environment then distrust has the potential to be created from the client. If a client feels distrust, they can in turn respond to the counselor in a guarded way and not disclose information that could potentially enable them to overcome the challenges they want to work on in therapy. A counselor maintain the quality of being genuine with clients they may disagree with by stating their perspective in a positive and authentic way. A counselor can disagree without being disagreeable and if the tone of the information is presented in a positive way the relationship with the client is able to be maintained.
